Tuesday Tooth Report

Teeth aren't the only thing affected by braces. Cheeks and lips take a beating from time to time, too. Wearing a mouth guard at night keeps my braces from eating into my cheeks while I sleep. To keep my lips from drying out, I wear lip gloss. The one that I've found works the best is Lip Smacker.

IEBGreen Challenge: Compost workplace garbage

anonymous said... "Every day I bring home compostable food from work, such as banana peels, napkins, etc., and put it in my compost at home."

This is wonderful! Most offices don't separate their garbage into Green (wet/compostable) and Blue (dry/recyclable) garbage — it all goes to the landfill together. So, this is an excellent way to reduce your office's contribution to the landfill site. If you're composting like anonymous is doing, then you're adding a rich nutrient to your garden at the same time. Gardens mean extra carbon-dioxide-breathing plants around your house which reduce CO2 and add Oxygen to your lot; not to mention beautiful flowers and tasty veggies for your family! This also means that you're reducing your dependance on food that had to travel to get to your doorstep.

Wow! By bringing Green garbage home to compost, you're significantly reducing your carbon footprint!

Thanks for your idea, anonymous!

Wednesday's Words of Wisdom

I joke with crowds that when a ship is sinking, after the rats have jumped off and the crew is in the lifeboats, the woman is helping the captain get his jacket on to make sure that he stays warm for the trip. Do you think Alphas will do that for you? No!" —Christopher V. Flett, Author of What Men Don't Tell Women About Business. ISBN: 978-0-470-14508-1

Tuesday Tooth Report

For some reason, I really don't like eating in front of people. I like food so much that I usually scarf it down -- the result can be embarrassing. You can imagine the extra anxiety now that I have braces on my teeth! Well, this week I ate with friends and managed to keep my composure. I was quite comfortable, actually. Either the company was great or I'm getting used to these things. A little of both, I'd say.

It's Easy Being Green Challenge

For a long time now, I've been trying to live a life that is friendly to both myself and the environment. But lately I've been feeling that what I do won't make a big difference and that nothing I do can be 100% friendly to the environment so why bother working so hard at it. I lost excitement for "going Green". I thought that I had to, overnight, have zero impact on the environment. Now I'm back on track with the realization that I don't have to be 100% Green overnight; one little bit at a time will get me there.

My ultimate goal? Be as close to 100% Green LIving as possible. My goal today? Do just one little thing to get me there.

So what did I do today? I bought PC Green Unbleached Coffee FIlters (I couldn't find a mesh basket but will keep looking. Promise.).

Take the It's Easy Being Green Challenge. You'll be making a big difference one tiny act at a time.

Spread the word. Invite your friends and family to the challenge. That could be your little change for today! And, post your tips here so that everyone can do the little things that you're doing. That could be your little change for tomorrow! See, it's easy being Green! I look forward to your comments.

Just had pineapple for dessert and now stringy bits are woven all through my braces and brackets. It was worth it!

Book Review — What Men Don't Tell Women About Business

Consultant Chris Flett, a self-described "former Alpha Male", originally created this as a document for his female clients to read before he met with them. Before long he realized that there was enough meat in the document and enough demand for its contents that he could develop it into a book.

With a writing style that makes you feel he's your mentor and he's sitting across the table from you, Flett has delivered a book that is so interesting and relevant to my business life that I read every word! Including every misspelled word. Yes, that's right, it suffers from grammatical and spelling errors but if you can get past that there are some real gems there. Hopefully his future efforts will be better proofed.

I encourage all women (and men, for that matter) to read it. It gives major insight into the professional relationships within an office. As the jacket promises, "Flett reveals everything you need to know to understand, communicate, and compete with men in business." Consider putting it at the top of your reading pile.

Haggling

Having visited other countries, David DeFranza was quickly forced to adapt to a bargaining-style of purchasing goods. His article "How Haggling Taught Me About Life" offers 6 tips that he now regularly employs while traveling. I can see these tips being handy in everyday life, too.

This week I've had a bit of a reprieve from pain. Yay! And, many molars are making connections so I was able to eat Southern-style BBQ Ribs at the Big Stop yesterday. Yum-mer!

Wednesday's Words of Wisdom

There are a lot of backwards authors and advisors of women out there who think women need to learn how to play golf, go for drinks at the club, or talk hockey in order to get into the boys club. Nothing can be further from the truth. The people who get invited into the game are the people who bring something to the table. If you aren't authentic, you can't be trusted. People who are trying to be authentic will look to partner with people who also value integrity and authenticity. Women don't have to become men in order to be successful. In fact, they should appreciate that they hold a lot of the skills that men attempt to learn. Authenticity is the foundation of the new paradigm of business." —Christopher V. Flett, Author of What Men Don't Tell Women About Business. ISBN: 978-0-470-14508-1

I can definitely tell that the molars on my bottom jaw are moving. The 'arch' of my jar is widening. Again, it's my tongue that discovered it! My tongue noticed that it has more space to live in. This is very, very good for me because I've always noticed that my tongue feels cramped in my mouth.

Jerry's AutoFetch

Does this puppy not look like the happiest pup ever? His parents obviously loved him very much to have built this machine for him. Sadly, he's no longer living. But boy did he have a good life! Direct to YouTube or view the video below.

Wednesday's Words of Wisdom

The new [2007 business] model, is based on integrity, authenticity, and relationships. This is how women have been doing business for the last 50 years, but the Alpha Males have chastised them for it because they felt women spent too much time caring. But the truth is, the new model is perfectly suited to women. ...and no one has shared with women that they are the perfect pilots for this new paradigm." —Christopher V. Vienna Vegetable Orchestra

"Your mother probably told you not to play with your food. But did she tell you not to play your food? The members of the Vienna Vegetable Orchestra do just that. The morning of each performance, they go shopping at a local produce market and pick out the specimens they think will make the best sounds. Then they set to work creating the instruments for that night’s show—mostly percussion instruments, but also flutes made of carrots, horns made from bell peppers, and all sorts of other weird concoctions. And these guys can really get a groove on (as the video demonstrates). After the show, they serve vegetable soup to the audience—though not, thankfully, made from the actual instruments that were just played! Way cool." See the YouTube video at GeekyGourmet.com.

Tuesday Tooth Report

Yesterday I received a new wire on the bottom jaw. It's a square wire, which they tell me is much stronger and will move teeth with more aggression than before. I felt the pressure immediately after they inserted it.

The top jaw received the same old wire on it -- they removed it, cleaned it, and reset it. (My top jaw has progressed faster than my bottom jaw due to fewer teeth needing straightening so it doesn't need a new wire yet.)

After the next 8 weeks, all teeth on both jaws should be aligned enough to begin the process of changing my bite. I've been forewarned that I will be wearing elastics on either my next or second-next visit.

See you next Tuesday!
