I have noticed that the same sound —for example, a train dopplering in the distance— has a different quality depending on the season. Am I imagining it or is this possible?

hey C,
You're probably hearing right. Atmospheric conditions play a big part in sound transmission. With the right conditions including wind direction, that distant train can sound like it's next door.
Cheers,
